The find was made during archaeological salvage works on the site, overseen by an independent heritage consultant.
The project update was published on School Infrastructure website during March this year.
In line with agreed practice, work in that location has been paused to allow consultation with Heritage NSW who will determine the next steps in preserving any relics that are salvageable in these areas.
While School Infrastructure NSW wait on formal advice from Heritage NSW, the schedule of work has been reordered to reduce any delays to project delivery.
It says works are anticipated to resume shortly.
The refurbishment works to the existing library has been brought forward to reduce delays to the planned timeline.
The existing library will be refurbished and a temporary library will be set up in the hall of block AA.
It is anticipated that construction on the existing library refurbishment will start early in Term 2, 2021 with a completion date in Term 4, 2021.
In relation to reports of a prisoner transfer tunnel linking the old courthouse and old jail, School Infrastructure NSW says it has completed ground penetrating radar scans, underfloor investigations by a timber specialist and on-site excavations to depths of three metres, however no evidence of a tunnel has been found.
Archaeological salvage work will recommence pending Heritage NSW approval.
The main construction works are set to be finished in mid-2022.
