The Cherrypickers struggled to capitalise in their 20-12 loss to Southcity at Laurie Daley Oval on Saturday.
Coach Nick Hall lamented a lack of discipline in the second half.
While he was pleased with their completion rate in the first half, it soon unravelled in the second.
"We got what we deserved as we were in that game," Hall said.
"We completed without being great in the first half, we just completed safely and simply, and they just showed they are one of those top sides who can handle that, repel you and then go down and take opportunity.
"We had three or four that we should have scored with but didn't push it over the line and played it safe.
"In the second half when we wanted to get some completions we turned it over five times in a row, didn't complete nine sets of 15 and at 40 per cent you can't win."
Young slip to third on the ladder with their losses coming against the two teams above them, Tumut and Southcity (twice).
Hall is looking to regroup when they host Albury at Alfred Oval on Sunday.

"There is a few things we could have done better like getting ourselves organised, better shapes and better balls.'
"It was an execution thing and we need to go through them a little bit better."
The Bulls were forced to defend six straight sets on their line in the first half but not only held strong but eventually made the Cherrypickers pay on the scoreboard.
"Young had most of the ball in the first 20 minutes so it was a massive credit to the boys," Rose said.
"I think we defended six sets in a row on the line and when you are doing that sort of stuff you are setting yourself up to be hard to beat."
The Bulls had lost their last two games against top four rivals and Rose was pleased with how they responded from a disappointing showing against Gundagai before the general bye.
"The key for us was just to hold onto the ball this week," he said.
"We knew if we could do that the points would come off the back of it and we showed that."
Young is in third after nine rounds of the Group Nine competition.
