For the first time in four seasons, the Cherrypickers will have a playing coach.

It was a big factor in the decision.

"You get two in one and it's no reflection on Nick Hall's coaching ability whatsoever as he's a great bloke and a great clubman but we thought it (playing coach) was a good way to go," president Josh Powderly said.

Cornish linked with Young this season after moving to town this year.

The 24-year-old is excited about the prospect of coaching the club, who were in third place when the season was called off.

"The club and the people who run the club are amazing and make you want to play for clubs like this," Cornish said. "That's why I wanted to coach them and be part of something like that.

"There's a crew around you that make you want to play football and they've made it really easy to move."

Hall was captain-coach for five seasons starting in 2001 before returning in a non-playing role last year.

After Young finished eighth in 2019, Hall guided them the preliminary final last year and had the team poised for their best result in 30 years before

He's disappointed not to be see his role through.

"It would have been nice to at least finish, whether it be winning or losing as it is a very unsatisfying finish," Hall said.

"That is for the boys to keep going on with next year and I won't be lost to the club.

"I will be doing something but I don't know yet."

Cornish is hopeful of being able to retain the majority of the side from this year.

That includes his older brothers Mitch and Tyler.

"I've been putting the hard word on them and we've been talking about it for a while now," he said.

He believes not finishing the season will only spur the club on as they look to win their first title since 1991.

"It's disappointing that in the end we will never know," Cornish said. "I think any of the top four sides could have won it but I feel we were getting some good momentum, especially after beating Tumut."
