Golden fields herald spring: SPRING has definitely sprung in the region with the canola in full bloom and the longer warmer days now dragging people outside from their hibernation indoors. Local man Ben Scrivener captured this brilliant shot of a local blooming canola crop.

Curl up on a couch for homeless: Fiona Anderson from The Salvation Army in Young will be swapping her bed for a couch this Saturday, September 13 to support youth homelessness. And on hand to make sure she gets comfy on the couch is husband and Young Corps leader Laurie.

Students out to support Legacy: Young High students and Young Army Cadets took to the streets on Friday, all in the name of raising money for Legacy Week. The students travelled around visiting businesses and selling items to raise funds.

Media giants battle it out: It was a battle of the media giants in Young on Friday and The Young Witness emerged the victor. Of course! With Roccy FM and The Witness both playing host to work experience students from Young High School, local radio announcer Wes Heather pitched the idea of a work experience-off.

Tiny tots suss out big school: Young Public School hosted some curious preschoolers recently, helping to introduce them to school life before they start Kindergarten next year. KB loved having the preschoolers visit them for a day. From back: Ellsie Brunton-Pennell, Chloe Laybutt, Cooper Saines and Charlie Wells; front: Makali Tonpi, Beau Kelly-Brolin, Wyatt Weeks, Shiloh Teiffel, Nicola Davis, Indigo Pardy and Chelsii Sell with Stepping Stones teacher Lucy Gates.  

A first for St Mary’s dads: To help celebrate Father's Day, St Mary's Primary School decided to host a Father's Day Golf Challenge at the Young Golf Club for the first time. And they have plans to make it an annual event. The inaugural winning dads were James French, Richard Hewitt and Jason Brown.

Numbers on the rise for Masters: The Young Cherryatrics Masters Rugby League Team is extremely proud to announce the inaugural ARL Masters City versus Masters Country representative game at their Masters Carnival on October 19. Pictured is Cherryatric Ted Hill in action

Former Burrangong Bears look back 10 years to premiership: This photo of the 2004 Burrangong Bears Rugby League Football Club was contributed by a former player to mark the 10th year anniversary of being undefeated minor and major premiers.

Highlighting a big achievement: Twelve-year-old Harry Fitzpatrick has been recognised by the Young Sports Advisory Committee for his state representation in rugby league.

Sky on show: Local David Seymour has been at it again - he got a brilliant shot of the storm on Tuesday night! What a light show we had! This photo was taken at the beginning of the storm and there was more to come.

Track trashed: The Young Greyhound Racing Club is “ropeable” after the mess Young rugby league players allegedly left at Alfred Oval on Sunday night, following their semi final loss in Wagga. Cans and broken bottles were left strewn across the oval, racing track and under-shelter, and a fire was still smoking, destroying the tar below. 

The day the Melbourne Cup came to town: The Melbourne Cup is known as the race that stops the nation but yesterday it was the cup that stopped Young – well the Young Visitor Information Centre anyway. By pure luck and one of its custodians' love for old train stations did the trophy stop in town during its national tour. Young Shire Council outdoor workers Steve Corkery, Ryan Mugridge and Chad Challen, and tourist officer David Newberry (left) didn’t hesitate to have their photo taken at the visitor centre with the Melbourne Cup, race broadcaster Bryan Martin and Toby Locke.

Half an hour of icy pain for Wes: Ice burn and welts weren’t enough to stop Wes Heather from completing his 100 ice bucket challenge for Motor Neuron Disease on Saturday. A crowd of about 250 people gathered for the action. But Wes got more than he bargained for when he took on 101 buckets and raised $10,400.

A day of honours for firefighters: 34 longstanding volunteers from Young and Harden were honoured by the NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) for their ongoing commitment to the local community on Saturday.

School of Music celebrates 30 years: The Young Regional School of Music held various events at their two locations in Campbell Street on Saturday to mark their 30th anniversary. This was followed by a dinner dance that night. Pictured are Chloe Allen playing Euphonium, accompanied by Stuart Bruce.   

An all-round good sport: Anna Dowling is certainly helping put Young and her little village of Murringo on the map when it comes to sport, not qualifying for one state titles but five in four sports - soccer, futsal, touch football and cross country. In three weeks’ time Dowling will head to Sydney to compete in the NSW Indoor Futsal Titles, as well as taking part in the state titles with the Football NSW Western Girls Soccer team.

McCafe win 2014 season: It was a great day for soccer and a very close game was played ending with McCafe winning on the day, 3-1. Pictured Adam Galvin kept control of the ball, supported by his team mates David Harrison and Darcy Hennock. 

Standout soccer stars recognised: Young Junior Lions Soccer Club held its annual presentation, as youngsters anxiously awaited their awards. Among them were the Under 12 grand final winners Cafe de Jour. Back, left to right: Coach Darren Pratt, Rhys Smith, Jonathon Hosken, Grace Shannon. Social media warning: Local police have warned young people to think twice about their social media and internet use after a number of local youths recently faced child pornography offences.

John an inspiration to all: World-renowned inspirational speaker John Coutis left Hennessy Catholic College students speechless during his visit to the school last week. John - who was born with a severe disability that rendered his legs useless - defied medical opinion by refusing to die, and at the age of 17 had his legs removed.

Mad Monday celebrations target mobility scooter: The sister of an elderly Young resident who had her mobility scooter tied up with fishing line during Young Rugby League’s Mad Monday celebrations has called on the culprits to apologise.

A sizzling start for Clint: The team at Gary’s Gourmet Meats were pretty chuffed upon receiving their results from the 2014 regional heats of the Australian Meat Industry Council’s Sausage King competition on Wednesday. This year it was Clint Bell who was busy in the kitchen preparing the sausages for judging with one goal in mind. He won first place in the poultry category, third in traditional Australian pork, second in continental, third in gourment/open and second in best butcher’s burger of which they missed out on a win by a mere two points.

Police appeal for witnesses: POLICE are calling for eyewitnesses to an accident that occurred in Mayoh Place overnight Tuesday.

A centenary celebration: Young Red Cross celebrated 100 years of service in town last week, marking the occasion with a special luncheon and cake cutting ceremony. Young mayor Stuart Freudenstein helped Joy Horton cut the celebration cake.

Spring’s in the air for St Mary’s annual fair: After months of planning and preparation, St Mary’s Primary School are all geared up for the the return of their Spring Fair tomorrow. St Mary’s Primary School Year 6 students Thomas Telfer, Ryan Lacey, Lachlan Summerfield, Cooper Morrison, Cleveland Waugh, Kara Mooney, and their fellow classmates showing their enthusiasm for tomorrow’s fair.

Cyclists take your marks: It’s time to dust of your pushbikes and lubricate the chains as all roads lead to Greenethorpe on Sunday, September 21. Le Tour de Greenethorpe is a great family day out riding past the canola-filled paddocks and historic Iandra Castle, with a bacon and egg roll or treat from the French inspired patisserie and coffee as a reward on your return.
