Top spot for Trish: Two local nurses have taken top spots in a category of the NSW Health Excellence in Nursing and Midwifery Awards, one returning home a winner. NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner congratulated Consumer Appreciation Award winner Trish Grainger (right) and category finalist Wendy Fisher, both of Young.

Locals glam-up and donate $5000 at ball: The Young Rural Fire Brigade was overwhelmed with the generosity of the town after raising $5000 at their Fireman’s Ball on Saturday night, September 6. Events entice strong weekend trade: Young has had an all-round boost in business over the last two weekends as locals and visitors by the hundreds emerged from their homes and hotel rooms to attend numerous events. There were five social events planned for Saturday, September 6 – the Young Regional School of Music’s (YRSM) 30th anniversary celebrations, a fireman’s ball, art exhibition and two charity fundraisers. A week later there were a further nine activities and events planned for September 13 and 14.

Teenager approached by elderly man: Police are appealing for public assistance after another child approach incident in Young on Friday. According to official reports betweeen 4pm and 4.25pm on Thursday a man aged approximately 70 years approached a 16-year-old boy in Nasmyth Street, Young, asking teenager personal questions and if he wanted to go for a drive with him.

PCYC earns regional plaudit: YOUNG’S PCYC has been at it again, this time earning themselves the regional Club of the Quarter award for noticeable improvements of the facility. Politician on the run: Angus Taylor, Member for Hume is the latest registrant for the Cherry Chase Fun Run. He is urging locals to get onboard and register for the event early. 

Young’s top drop: Young may be a long way from the northern Italian region of Piedemont, but the Hilltops region is certainly coming close to being the next best thing when it comes to winemaking.

Young’s top drop: Xanthe Freeman accepted the Hilltops “Wine of the Year” award at the Hilltops Awards luncheon at Ballinaclash Orchard on behalf of Freeman Vineyards. 

Who will it be? Prior to the mayor election, Young predicted they could have a new mayor after councillors revealed it was going to be a close contest between our current mayor Stuart Freudenstein and Cr John Walker. The annual mayoral election – to take place at the beginning of council’s September monthly meeting at 5pm – has the potential to swing either way at this stage and a single vote could make the difference.


All aboard the Quandy train: If you haven’t heard about the centenary celebrations at Quandialla over the long weekend, it’s time to start planning. And if the range of activities from a bush dance to commemoration of the Fettlers and Settlers Wall, unveiling of a centenary quilt, arts and crafts displays and much more, aren’t enough to entice you -  there’s this. Let a beautifully restored CPH railmotor, often reffered to as “Tin  Hares”,  transport you back in time as it travels between the nearby villages of Caragabal and Bribbaree.

Moppity wins another trophy: Moppity Vineyards has picked up another award, this time winning a major trophy at the NSW Small Winemakers Show in Forbes. 

A jump and throw to state: It was a case of gold, silver and bronze as Young students returned home brandishing medals from the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges Athletics Championships (NSWCCC) last week. Comp a touch of fun: Last season was a hot season on the field and the competition was strong. Organisers are hoping for a report of last year's action this season, calling on nominations. Pictured are Will Scott prepares to dodge Jake Dawe in last year’s semi finals.

‘Pickers give their all: After a great season of rugby league the Young Services Club Under 11s where totally outplayed by a very good Gundagai team. Teammate Duke Maloney offered upset front rower Will Steed some comfort after being injured early in the game and not having the chance to play a big part. 

Indoor bowlers roll into town: Up to 80 indoor bowlers from 20 districts descended on Young at the weekend for the Young Indoor Bowling Club open day at the Young Services Club. Attendees said the day wasn’t about “winning or losing” just pure enjoyment. The best of the shire on show: Young prepares for their annual show at the Young Showground on Monday and Tuesday, September 22 and 23.


Sporting stars to take centre stage: Canberra Capitals star player Abby Bishop will be available for photos and signing at the ActewAGL stand that will feature at this year's Young Annual Show.

Prime lamb competition returns to show: The Young Show Prime Lamb section has made a return to the Young Show this year. The section was introduced in the late 1960s-early 1970s by the late Donald McGregor of Don McGregor Stock & Station Agency. 

 2014 Miss Young Showgirl entrants: With a strong interest in competition and performance horses, Renee Farthing is well placed to understand just how a local show works.

Farmer, now a scholar: Young's Tom Eastlake was awarded a prestigious Nuffield Scholarship supported by Horticulture Australia Limited, as part of the across-industry program with matching funds from the Australian government.

Ice bucket challenge for MND sufferer: Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is perhaps the most talked about illness in the world at the moment, with the ice bucket challenge phenomenon. Knowing all too well there’s no effective treatment or cure, Wombat woman and MND sufferer Lois Bloor - who is now fully confined to a wheelchair and completely dependent on her husband Ray - plans to keep the awareness alive by doing an ice bucket challenge tomorrow in the front yard of her Rose Street home.

Action-packed term at Monteagle: Term 3 has been very busy for the students at Monteagle Public School. They have participated in several fundraising activities for worthwhile charities such as the Heart Foundation’s Jump Rope for Life and Jeans for Genes Day. Hands-on experience for students: Over the last two terms Hennessy Catholic College has taken 18 schools - both state and Catholic - from around the region under their wing to provide the students with a more hands-on learning experience in the categories of mathematics and science. U16s dig deep, pick off South City: THE Under 16 Cherrypickers had to dig deep and come from behind to beat a much bigger South City side who led 10-nil early in the match. Young won 30-16 and will now go in as underdogs against the minor premiers, Wagga Brothers, on their home ground.
