It's that time of the week again when we take a look back at what's been happening in Young this week. Every week we compile our top stories from around the shire over the last seven days&nbsp;to form this photo gallery and keep you updated. This week's news summary&nbsp;is from November 17-21. Access all areas: A local navy veteran is out to raise awareness of support dogs and where they can and can't go following an encounter at a local hotel on Remembrance Day. A life-saving service: The Snowy Hydo SouthCare helicopter often goes unnoticed and unrecognised. The Bassingthwaighte family share their story about how vital the service was and the great job they do when their then toddler son was run over by a ride-on mower, causing considerable damage to his foot.

New system may attract doctors: There are hopes a new classification system to attract doctors to rural and regional areas will help stem the shortage of medical professionals in Young. The current system which provides financial incentives to doctors working in remote areas had been criticised for often grouping together regional cities - such as Wagga and Townsville - with rural towns. 

Only quality items at Vinnies: As a former fashion stylist, Young’s new St Vincent de Paul’s manager Samantha West is taking Vinnies to a whole new level. Show day no longer a half-day holiday: As of September next year, the Tuesday of the Annual Young Show will no longer be a half-day public holiday. Young Shire Council has agreed to apply to the NSW Minister for Finance and Services, Dominic Perrottet, for the day to now become a half-day local “event” day, from noon to 6pm. This means businesses will not have to close or pay their staff penalty rates.

Grandparents disco: The Young Community Hub hosted a Happy Grandparents Day Dance at the Young Golf Club recently. Among those who attended were Trevor and Robyn and their granddaughter Olivia thoroughly enjoyed the evening.    

Village holds market day: The community at Murringo is presently gearing up for the next village market this Sunday, November 23. The market, which is held every three months, has become very popular, with a wide variety of stalls as well as activities and fun for the whole family. 


Cherry Chase:  Organisers were overwhelmed at the turnout for the 2014 Cherry Chase Fun Run held at Chinaman’s Dam on Sunday morning. Monteagle residents fed up with their tip: A number of Monteagle residents have voiced their concerns about the services they receive at their village landfill. They claim the 40 or so 240 litre bins available to them are in a constant state of overflow - as is the metal recycling container - and weren’t getting emptied as often as they should. This was forcing them to dump their garbage on the ground around the bins. But council’s strategic services and environmental director Craig Filmer said residents weren't using all the bins, blaming it on busyness or laziness of users.

The Smith’s top crop: A Gregory variety wheat has emerged as the district’s best crop in the Young Show Society’s 2014 Wheat Crop competition. Steve and Sally Smith of  “Burramunda”, on the Henry Lawson Way took out the top honours. Roll-up for the circus! The Circus Royale arrived in town earlier this week, providing much entertainment for Young locals. They held performances over three nights, with Thursday night being the last night.

Young artists on show: A selection of  students from Young High School will have their artwork on show at the Cowra Regional Art Gallery from today. It’s all part of an exhibition called "upstART 2014", which showcases students’ work around the Central West region. Young North students look to their futures: Young North Public School has lauded its Future Moves Project - held in conjunction with Charles Sturt University - a success. The program aims to encourage students in rural and remote  areas who have limited exposure to higher education to aspire to university. Pictured are Logan Apps. Cup day thrills and spills at St Mary’s: St Mary's Primary School in Young held Melbourne Cup celebrations of their own, in the form of novelty horse races. Some classic moments were able to be captured on camera by school staff, including this one of Will Cannellis and Josh Cameron.

Shields tastes the pro life: Young's Joel Shields has had his first professional break after qualifying for the NSW Open. Shields was among the 32 competitors who qualified for the amateur category that had him rubbing shoulders with well-known professional golfers. Streets Ahead make a splash: TWELVE teams took part in the inaugural Cherry Splash Challenge at the Young Aquatic Centre on Saturday evening. The winners of the main event were winners Sam Langfield, Harrison Black, Emily Hardy and Tim Langfield. 

Participation numbers triple: IT DIDN’T matter if you were young or old, fast or slow, fit or, well... not so fit, you certainly weren’t alone during the Cherry Chase Fun Run held at Chinaman’s Dam on Sunday morning. PLACINGS: The first three placings for the men’s 10km Cherry Chase were Brad Hetharia in first place with a time of 35:14, Jacob Tiernan in second with 37:52 and Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor in third with 40:06. They are pictured with Pip The Cherry.

Sickening attack: Three people from Young were charged over the robbing and bashing of an elderly man for his pension in Chester Hill, Sydney on Wednesday morning. The attack was captured on CCTV footage and obtained by Channel Nine. The footage shows a man and a woman approaching Mr Carlino, before the man throws a punch that knocks the elderly man to the ground. A man and woman can be seen rifling through Mr Carlino's pockets, before walking away with his cash.

Two children ignite grass fire: Police investigations have revealed two children, aged nine and 11 years, were behind the grass fire in Pine View Circuit on Tuesday. Locals steal the spotlight at Circus Royale: Two locals stole the spotlight, albiet for a few minutes, at the Circus Royale this week. Circus Royale pitched their big top at Young Showground for three days, but it was opening night on Tuesday that provided more than a few surprises. The night featured a local 11-year-old to act as junior ringmaster as well as radio announcer Wes Heather (pictured) in a number of acts, such as the high wire stunt.

Circus Royale: Wes Heather must have made quite the impression because he was invited back to Circus Royale Wednesday and last night. He said the nerves kicked in again when they told him they were putting him in the knife throwing routine this time.

Act changes could come at cost to community: Amendments to the local government act could potentially make it more difficult for residents and ratepayers to access important council information.
The legislation, which is aimed at cutting red tape, will remove the requirement for councils to advertise information in a newspaper and allow them to advertise “such other manner as is determined by council”.

Local spots rare cloud: Roy Jerrim was up north on a fishing trip, staying at Seven Emu Station, camped approximately 80 kilometres south of the homestead. There he was given the rare treat of witnessing the  the elusive morning glory cloud - a rare meteorological phenomenon consisting of a low-level atmospheric solitary wave and associated cloud.

Kindys experience the big outdoors: LAST week St Mary’s Primary School welcomed 58 new kindergarten children who will be joining the school in January 2015. The orientation coincided with the opening of the school’s new Outdoor Learning Centre. Pictured enjoying the outdoors were Jarryd Foster and Maddison Shean.

Hundreds bowling in: Hundreds of keen bowlers flooded to Young this week to take part in the 2014 Cherry Festival Bowls Tournament. The fortnight of competition kicked off on Tuesday with the ladies triples. The two-day tournament attracted 120 women - 40 teams - from as far away as Penrith, Kiama, Sussex and Tuncurry. Infants have a ball at fun day: St Mary’s Primary School infants were treated to an athletics fun day on November 14. Students from Kindergarten to Year 2 donned their house colours as they participated in age races as well as rotation games. Year 1 boys Trent Shean, Lucas Moloney, Joey Power, Noah Ryan, Benny Knapman, Zachary Thompson, Brennan Healey, Harry McAtamney, Kody Melross and Jackson Butt had a break in the shade. All on track for Cherry Cup: After a prolonged spring break, racing returns to the Young Paceway Friday night, November 28 with the running of the 2014 $12,000 Young Cherry Festival Cup, together with a strong supporting program. To be run over the 2480m journey, the C4 and better class race has continued, over many years, to attract some of the best pacers racing in country NSW. One game separates leaders: The last competition for the year for the Young Squash Club has entered its fifth and final week. At the end of the fourth round, Aldo’s Freight held the lead by one game from Job Centre. Glenn Payne of Powderly’s Electrical and Iain Rice of team Job Centre prepare to play in their fifth round match. 

Last night at bridge: Long time member Max Kershaw (centre) was farewelled by members Jane Wallace, Norma Butler, Nikki Gordon and Bonnie Muirhead while enjoying some bubbly and a laugh with Max on his last night.
