It's that time of the week again when we take a look back at what's been happening in Young this week. Every week we compile our top stories from around the shire over the last seven days&nbsp;to form this photo gallery and keep you updated. This week's news summary&nbsp;is from January 5-9. New Year, new bub: Mackenzie Lee Ann Fogg is Young’s first baby for 2015. This youngster was born at Young District Hospital just in time - at 9.15pm - to claim the first day of the year, January 1, as her birthday. And in time to take the first 2015 baby title. Tipping the scales at a healthy 3402 grams (7.5lb) and measuring 49 centimetres, Mackenzie is the first child and daughter of doting parents Jessica Sell and Joshua Fogg of Monteagle. Grants for GP facilities: Mayor John Walker said Young would be very excited to get their hands on a $300,000 federal grant for the construction of regional GP training facilities, for which applications are now being sought. Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor has announced funding applications for new federal grants of up to $300,000, to build facilities to take on more trainee doctors and GP registrars, are being invited. Successful applicants will be required to match the Commonwealth funding.

Excellent recognition for Young farmers: Stephen and Sally Smith of “Burramunda” on the Grenfell Road were presented with the prestigious Excellence in Farming trophy at the 2014 Suncorp Bank/Agricultural Societies Council Dryland Field Wheat competition awards dinner in Forbes on December 12. Competition judge and agronomist, Paul Parker, also of Young, said the award is a whole farm award. ONE HORSE TOWN: Burrowa Street, Lambing Flat. This delightful image  is housed at the State Library of NSW. Now we’re not that old to know what is where - and we won’t hazard a guess, except we’re pretty sure we’re looking east up the street.

Life membership awards: The Young Bowling Club played host to the Young Historical Society’s Christmas celebration in December. During the dinner three people were awarded life membership of the society for their years of dedicated service as office holders for the society and volunteers helping to run the Lambing Flat Folk Museum. Society president Brian James presented Joyce Simpson, Max Holmes and Barbara Brennan their certificates for volunteering at the museum for over 50 years. 

Top honours for junior cricketers: It almost seems a case of déjà vu as three of Young’s junior cricketers follow in the footsteps of Australian spin bowler Nathan Lyon after being selected for the Under 14 and 16 Western Zone teams to compete in the NSW Country Championship Carnival. Representation: The Under 16s Bradman Cup - which is part of the NSW Country Championship Carnival - hit-off today at Maitland/Singleton. Fifteen-year-old Jonte Powderly (pictured), who represented the Under 14s in 2014, has now stepped up into the Under 16s where he will be the wicket keeper and opening batsman. 

Outstanding Hampton: Two members of the Young Indoor Bowling Club have been attending the local Southern Cross Aged Care Village each Monday morning as volunteers teaching residents the art of indoor bowling. On their final day for 2014 it was decided to award a trophy to the most outstanding bowler, going to Joyce Hampton, who is pictured (centre) with  Reg Hayes and Wilma Moor-Galvan.


Bowser prices fuel frustration: Young residents vented their frustrations on The Young Witness's Facebook page amid mounting concerns country people are being ripped off at the bowser. Our firefighters in SA: Three RFS firefighters from the South West Slopes Zone - two from Young - headed to the Adelaide Hills to help their fellow volunteers battle the devastating bushfires. Father of two dies from crash injuries: 36-year-old Bribbaree man Paul West died in Canberra Hospital on Monday morning after suffering serious head injuries when he rolled his car at the Bribbaree Road and Weedallion Road intersection, outside the village on Sunday night. Photo Facebook.

The 2014 cherry queen entrants raised a staggering $29,884 between them for local charities, in the bid for the winning title. The three entrants presented their cheques to their chosen charities recently, with crowned Charity Queen (centre) handing over $7247 for the Georgina Josephine Foundation. Emotional thanks to Katrina for Food Hall funds: Young’s Food Hall capped off its inaugural year of operation with a significant injection into its coffers. Emotions ran high as Member for Burrinjuck Katrina Hodgkinson presented volunteers with a cheque for $13,000. Photo Daniella White.

Mad Hatter’s party marks 20th year: Annette’s Place Childcare Centre hit a milestone recently. They've been operating in Young for 20 years, so they decided to celebrate with a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. Pictured are Dom Northcott, Karen Ower, Hayley Walker and Isaac Northcott. Dom and Isaac were among the first children enrolled at Annette’s Place while Karen and Hayley attended the centre as children and are now staff members.

Numbers a focus: The Young Squash Club aims to make some changes as they enter their 2015 season. With new faces on the committee, new ideas are bound to come up. Students scoop sport awards: Hennessy Catholic College’s Tom Sargent is the recipient of the Junior Sports Award for his achievements in Sprint Car Racing - a champion. 

RUGBY: Under 13 Young Yabbies captain Nick Alcorn was recognised by the Young Sports Advisory Committee for his achievements in rugby union. 

CERTIFICATE: Young Cherrypickers Under 13s captain Jacob Lucas received recognition from the Young Sports Advisory Committee for his efforts in rugby league.

NUMBER ONE: The intermediate sportsperson of July 2014 was awarded to Young High School’s Monique Doorman. Monique was recognised by the Young Sports Advisory Council after being named Riverina's number one seed in tennis.

Baby boom to baby bust: Young has gone from a small baby boom to a baby bust in 12 months, with 2014 recording its lowest birth rate in eight years. The Young Health Service last year delivered just 145 babies, 41 less than 2013 and 25 less than the previous lowest figure (in 2012) over the last eight years. There were between one and nine babies less born per month in 2014 than the previous year, except in May when it surpassed 2013’s figure of 16 by one. 

An ambassador in her home town: This year Australia Day celebrations at Young centre on historic Carrington Park and will feature a range of activities including a citizenship ceremony and an address from one of Australia’s most successful authors. The town’s Australia Day Ambassador for 2015 is award winning author and local Valerie Parv, the Australia Society of Authors ASA Medal  2014-15 recipient who has had more than 29 million copies of her books sold, translated into 26 languages and as e-books.

Worthy bunch receive recognition: A swag of locals were recognised at December’s monthly council meeting for their contributions to the community. The Chamber of Commerce was praised for arranging the Christmas Market Day on December 14 (pictured), while Woolworths staff were congratulated for their efforts and the donation of gifts to the residents of Southern Cross Care and Mount St Joseph’s. Also getting a nod were the three Cherry Queen entrants, Caitlin Muller, Jessica Saines and Emily Hardy, Australian cricketer Nathan Lyon and his parents, outgoing Young High School principal Andrew Turvey, Kaleigh Forbutt and the Young Youth Council for organising the Cherry Chase, and Dean Cafe and the 18 walkers and 26 riders for raising funds for Camp Quality. Firefighters return home: Rural Fire Service volunteers - including two from Young - returned home from South Australia on Wednesday and were overcome by the generosity of the Adelaide community.Patrick Vincent from Young, Nyle Barwick (West Wyalong), Andrew Carter (West Wyalong) and Jayden Nicholls (Harden) landed at the Young Airport at 10.30am following their five day deployment to battle the Adelaide Hills fires. Tributes flow in for Paul West: Tributes have poured into The Witness following the untimely death of 36-year-old local man Paul West in a motor vehicle accident near the small village of Bribbaree on Sunday night. Paul has been described by his parents, Bill and Anne West, as a son and father of two who lived an incredibly full life in a way that was much larger than life. 

John R highlights Young’s summer garden spectacular: Driving around Young, from the roundabouts and gardens around Anderson Park to a walk around the golf course, the beautiful display of colours are everywhere. Another step closer: Locals are another step closer to having  multipurpose sporting facilities in town after Young Shire Council approved the final draft of the Young Shire Sporting Needs Study. At the beginning of the financial year council agreed to fast track upgrades of local sporting fields over 10 years to have them completed within a 12 month period. At their November monthly meeting, they approved the final draft of the sport study and Young’s strategic plan for local sports grounds after more than a year of research and consultation.

A stellar line up at sales: Local standard breeders and harness racing participants will once again converge on the Newmarket selling complex in Randwick on Saturday, February 28 for the much anticipated 2015 Australian Pacing Gold Sales. Long-time supporters of the sales, John, Mary and Jackie Gibson of Success Stud, Young will once again be providing a stellar line up of around 12 yearlings, while Monteagle couple Rachael and David Micallef (pictured), will be front and centre with around six or seven well bred yearlings.
