Woman leaps to safety: As fire tore through a Clarke Street furniture store on Saturday morning an occupant of the upstairs apartment was forced to jump from the first floor to escape the blaze. Emergency services were called to La-Z-Boy Gallery, part of the Turners Furniture One complex, at about 6.30am with the fire well ablaze. It took several fire crews six hours to extinguish. Three injured in Memagong Lane crash: Two local people were airlifted to hospital on Friday afternoon after having to be freed from their vehicle following a head-on collision on Memagong Lane, west of Young. NSW Police and paramedics were called to the accident at 1.24pm and the Snowy Hydro SouthCare helicopter was dispatched. A third person was taken to Young Hospital for minor facial injuries. CanAssist thanks locals: Young/Boorowa CanAssist members Margaret Cooke (left) and Chris Wright (right) thanked Sno Woods from the Young District Anglers Association for recently donating $1000 to the branch. The Empire Hotel Fundraising Club - who recently held a men’s lunch fundraiser – also donated $3140. 

Show holiday may be no more: Shops shutting at 12pm and employees having the afternoon off to attend the Annual Young Show may soon be a thing of the past with Young Shire Council throwing their support behind a NSW government proposal for the show’s half-day public holiday to become an “event day” from next year to benefit local businesses. Exploring wine growth: In an attempt to quench Australia’s thirst for wine, the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) has welcomed a new viticulturist, Darren Fahey, based at Wagga. And it’s a move that Hilltops Wine hopes will boost the region.

Clients recognised for achievements: A record attendance of 145 people were recorded at the recent Lambing Flat Enterprises Awards night held at the Southern Cross Cinema on August 25. Rebecca and Henry Hewson, who received a Star Award for improved concentration and trying his best at all times.

Traditions bring bikers back to Wombat: It seems the traditional focus on bikes big and small, young and old, is what keeps the bikers coming back to the Wombat Bike Rally every year. Among the 1800 bikers this year’s rally attracted, people were overheard saying they loved attending the Wombat rally because it was run like “old traditional rallies” as opposed to modern day rallies run more like festivals. Pope breaks drought: Seventeen-year-old Jarrod Pope’s latest achievement is definitely one for the Young Saints AFL Club’s record books. He became the first Under 18s Saint in history to win the Under 18s Best and Fairest Award for the Central West. Furthermore, the last Young Saints players to receive the award in any grade was Mark Buchanan in 1985, and Damien Minehan in 1986, both in First Grade. Photo by Elouise Hawkey

Two months until Cherry Chase: Its less than two months until the inaugural Cherry Chase Fun Run and deputy mayor Ben Cooper, Cr Brian Mullany, Young Youth Council secretary Brianna Dawe, Youth Council mayor Isaac Northcott, and Cr Stuart Freudenstein are encouraging everyone to get on board and register now.

Devastated but community support leaves Steve speechless: Like other onlookers who congregated around Turner’s Furniture One on Saturday morning, manager Steve Turner stood helpless as a suspicious fire ravaged his family business. But while the shop was gutted, and years of history became little more than ashes, Steve said the strength and goodwill of the community shone through with people everywhere offering to help. Fire being treated as suspicious: Police were yesterday unable to confirm reports a suspicious fire that ravaged a Young furniture store and adjoining apartments on Saturday morning was the result of a botched break and enter. Murringo man trampled by steer: A Murringo farmer is lucky to be alive and with no serious injuries after an altercation with a steer on Saturday morning. The man, aged in his fifties, was knocked unconscious by a steer and dragged a short distance when he was pushing cattle from a pen, up through a chute and onto a truck. He was airlifted to Canberra Hospital.

Ice bucket challenge raises more than $3000: WOMBAT’S Lois Bloor wanted to do what she could to raise awareness of an illness that has her confined to a wheelchair and fully dependant on others. Lois suffers from Motor Neurone Disease (MND). So she decided to do her bit and bravely took on an ice bucket challenge of her own, raising more than $3000 in front of 40 spectators.

Fire season: October 1 marks the start to the Bush Fire Danger Period. The NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) is reminding Young, Boorowa, Cootamundra and Harden residents that fire permits are now required. 

Quandialla church joins village celebration: After the railway went through Quandialla, St Brigids Church was built by Len Pendergast from Stockinbingal. The church, opening on November 9, 1924, celebrates its 90th year during this weekend’s Quandialla Centenary celebrations.

A step above the rest: Four Young Cherrypickers have stamped their mark on the Group Nine competition after receiving  recognition for their outstanding performances throughout the 2014 season. Robertson brings home state title: Last month Robertson’s Gymnastics had five gymnasts qualify for the ACT State Championships in Levels 5-7. Among them were Brianna Briggs who placed fifth on vault and 15th overall and Jetta Kennett who placed third on bars in Level 5 and 12th overall.

Blooming good year: Local cherry growers are “cautiously optimistic” that the coming season will see the industry turn its fortunes around. With cherry trees now in full bloom, conditions are almost as good as they could be, according to local grower Tom Eastlake.

Lifeline: Wes is at it again: There are many benefits to being a Lifeline VIP ticket holder at this year’s Burrangong Picnic Races, but for organiser Wes Heather the real perk is raising awareness for the organisation itself.

Superfast broadband here: New NBN (National Broadband Network) towers around Cowra and Young have been activated, connecting more than 1200 homes to superfast broadband. Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor said towers had been switched on at Cowra, Cowra West, Koorawatha, Noonbinna and Young West.

Students pitch in for food hall: It’s an annual tradition of Young High School’s Year 12 students to raise money for a gift or new equipment for the school on their last day of class. But the class of 2014 decided to mix things up a bit by instead choosing to donate the funds they raised to the Young Food Hall.

10 years of Mercy Care celebrated: Mercy Care held 10 year anniversary celebrations on September 24, unveiling a water feature to commemorate the occasion. Wander through Bendick Murrell: With a view to die for and a landscape design to match, Young/Boorowa CanAssist organisers couldn’t resist but to choose this Bendick Murrell garden – and two others in the area – as their hosts for this year’s Garden Wander on Sunday, October 19. For the last three years CanAssist held what they called the Bendick Murrell Walk, but this year they decided to combine the two. Race club’s golden crop: Young’s Toompang Racecourse has been transformed into a sea of gold which hopefully will yield vital funding for Burrangong Picnic Race Club. Earlier in the year the club decided to sow canola on the 55 acres of unused land in the centre of the racecourse to boost their coffers. Karters vie for champion title: The Bogolong Kart Raceway at Grenfell will roar into life on the October long weekend to the sound of over 200 of Australia’s best karters vying for honours in the 2014 Schweppes NSW Sprint Kart Championships.

Quarter century support for races: The Burrangong Picnic Race Club is pleased to announce Isuzu Ute and the team at McAlister Motors are the major sponsor for this year’s picnic races on Saturday, October 11.
