NBN expands to Young and beyond

The NBN gained further momentum in rural and regional NSW last week with physical construction commencing on 23 new fixed wireless installations.

 Following a thorough planning and consultation phase, these NBN facilities will service more than 4700 farms, homes and businesses across parts of a number of regions and communities, including Young and surrounding areas.

According to the NBN Co rollout map has reached “build commenced” status with construction of one fixed wireless network having started in Young in February this year and Bribbaree in January 2014.

This compares with Cowra which on the roll-out map is showing construction of nine fixed wireless networks is underway.

Cootamundra, Harden, Boorowa and Yass show no signs of NBN installation.

“Build commenced” means that NBN Co has issued contract instructions to construction partners so they can commence work in this area. The build commenced boundaries are subject to change as a result of boundary changes which may be made during the construction process. 

NBN Co spokesperson, Tony Gibbs, said the fixed wireless service can bring better broadband to the bush.  

The fixed wireless service is designed to provide access to internet speeds and bandwidth that many in the big cities currently take for granted.

“For decades, rural and regional Australia has been left behind when it comes to telecommunications. 

“The NBN also means you can get the whole family online at once, opening up opportunities for local farms, businesses and the wider region to participate in the digital age. 

Fast broadband can help deliver improved access to health, education and entertainment over high quality video links,” Mr Gibbs said.

On average, it takes around 12 months from the start of construction until residents and business owners can order NBN retail services from telephone or internet service providers.
