National medal for author: Since Valerie Parv started calling Young home in 2011, we’ve claimed her as one of our own. And for good reason too. The international best selling romance novelist has now joined the ranks of acclaimed Australian authors such as Tim Winton and Inga Clendinned after being awarded an Australian Society of Authors (ASA) Medal.


Lambs savaged by dog in daytime attack: A local woman’s one-week-old lambs were savagely killed on Thursday after a neighbour’s dog escaped onto her property.

PCYC pitches in to help teach young drivers: The Young PCYC now holds regular Safer Drivers courses to help learner drivers become safer on our roads, which can knock 20 hours off their compulsory 120 log book hours. Young driving coach and facilitator Ian Baird with his two latest participants of the PCYC Safer Drivers course Molly Maloney and Sophie Tierney. 

Open: The Sacred Heart Hospital - now referred to as the old Mercy Care Hospital in Campbell Street - open its doors in 1911. These are the sisters and nurses pictured on opening day. A nurses reunion was held at the weekend.

Award honours achieving alumni: The Wall of Renown at Young High School recognises the achievements of past students who have gone on to make a significant contribution. They are now looking for nominations for the 2014 inductee.

Community radio supports local rugby league: THERE once was a time locals who couldn’t get to the footy were able to tune into the radio to keep up with the ‘Picker’s onfield action. And now you can again thanks to 2YYY community radio who are now broadcasting the games live after purchasing new outdoor equipment.

Oh deer, what have we here? RED Deer arrived in Australia around the same time as gold was struck at Burrangong Creek, a gift lines - a gift from His Royal Highness Prince Albert from Windsor Great Park. 154 years later a Thuddungra resident awoke to find this rare surprise in one of her paddocks.

Helping a fellow sister out: For women in disadvantaged communities a bra is often unobtainable or unaffordable, but this is a situation local ladies can help change. Marg Duggan from Undercover Sleepwear and Lingerie in Forbes has joined forces with a national Uplift Project, which collects new and second hand bras and sends them wherever they have requests.

Exam paper dispute has mother seeing red: Temora woman is in dispute with the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES) after it denied a request for her 18-year-old son, who suffers from Irlens Syndrome, to be able to have his exam papers printed on coloured paper. BOSTES overturned their decision on Tuesday and approved her request.


Long serving firies honoured: Up to 18 long serving volunteer firefighters from the Young Shire were honoured with a special medal ceremony at the weekend, 15 of them hailing from the Boara brigade. Their service calculated at 476 years combined.

Koorawatha Rural Fire Brigade: Leeanne and Mark Savva, and Adam Reilly (all centre) had 54 years of service to the RFS combined and were awarded long service medals during a special ceremony on Saturday.

Bunny takes Bulls by the horns: An outstanding two-try haul from flanker Sam Bunny in the second half helped the Young Yabbies defeat the Tumut Bulls 39-36 in a nail-biter at Cranfield Oval last Saturday. Pictured First Grade Yabbie Rory Sheard, supported by Blake Maxworthy, powers through the Tumut Bulls’ defence at the weekend.

Young Dressage celebrates 40 years: This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Young Dressage Association, and the club numerous events set down celebrate the occasion. A special dinner will be held this Saturday night. Pictured is Young Dressage Association founding member Ann Crichton.

MERCY SAVED: After being approved for demolition last year, the old Mercy Care Hospital has been given a new lease on life, boosting industry and education in Young in the process. In a coup for the town, the site has been sold to investors to establish a national college for agricultural education.

Fire brings operations to a standstill: Operations at Causmag International were disrupted early yesterday morning, following a fire on the Young-based company’s conveyor belt. 

Rare quilts on show: What’s better than having a rare Egyptian quilt on display at your local quilt show? Nine rare Egyptian quilts of course. That’s what you can expect to see, among the local and competition entries, when you attend this year’s Young Lions Club quilt show tomorrow and Sunday at the Young Town Hall from 10am to 4pm.

Three make SIRU cut: Three Young Yabbies players have been selected in the Southern Inland Rugby Union (SIRU) representative side to take part in the Brumbies Provincial Tournament in Jindabyne on the June long weekend. 

Young snatches a 2-0 win: Young Lions Women’s Soccer team had lost a close encounter last time they met CSU but this time they were able to turn around the result with a comfortable 2-0 win.

Under 16s outscore Wagga: Young's Under 16s fought back from 16-6 down at half time to outscore Wagga Brothers 18-nil in the second half to come out winners 24-16. 

It’s time, Cherryettes look for win: This weekend the Young Cherryettes will take on Tumut Blues in Tumut. While the Cherryettes are yet to win, they are looking very promising for this weekend’s line-up.
