Now they are turning to residents in the region, including Young, to help their mission to find local diggers.
In total 315 men enlisted from the Boorowa District, 56 of them never returned. There are 12 who have no known grave and four of whom we have no details at all.
Ann Wales, who volunteers at the National War Memorial, has put in a huge effort towards this project.
She has spent hours seeking and photographing or scanning existing photos in local village halls and churches.
Her research has also provided service records for a number of Boorowa diggers, and in some cases, copies of their original enlistment papers.
Where actual photographs of some of the men could not be found, Ann managed to source and scan newspaper photos.
Custodian of the Boorowa War Memorial Peter Dewar was asked by the committee to arrange framing of the photographs.
To date, some 22 photos and service records have been obtained.
Peter considered purchasing frames but he realised that before Anzac Day 2015 it was likely that more photos would come to light and that finding additional matching frames could be a problem.
“I thought that making the frames myself would be the best solution,” he said.
Peter then decided to use some timber shelving he was given salvaged from Wentworth House (1885).
“As the saw blades and router table reduced a 10 foot length of shelving into over 100 pieces, the thought crossed my mind that some of the young men in the photos may very well have purchased goods which had been stored on this actual shelf,” he said.
The photos will be hung in the War Memorial when completed.
The service records of each soldier will be available in an indexed folder so visitors to the memorial will be able to obtain these details as well as putting faces to some of the names on the Honour Roll.
Readers who may have photos of WW1 soldiers, or who may know former Boorowa residents who could have such photos are asked to contact Peter or Carolyn on 63 85 3313 or Derek Mason on 6385 3213.
