Lyon encourages locals to step up to the pitch

Aussie spin bowler and former Young man Nathan Lyon joined NSW Blues players Ben Dwarshuis and Emily Leys from the Lend Lease Breakers, during the visit to promote cricket in regional areas at the grass roots level.

The Cricket NSW initiative aims to encourage boys and girls of all ages to sign up and play for their local club this summer.

“The purpose of the visit is to come out and give back to every community,” Lyon said.

“A lot of our players are travelling around country NSW to promote the sport that both boys and girls can play.”

Lyon idolised his father and brother in his early days as they practised with him through the years. He also got his inspiration from Australian former international cricketer Shane Warne. 

First up was St Mary’s Primary School who enjoyed a question and answer session with the three cricket stars.

The trio each took turns in introducing themselves and answering questions from the curious youngsters.

Lyon answered questions ranging from “does it get boring standing on the field?” to “who inspired you?”.

Next up was Young North Public School who were able to enjoy a practical session with Lyon on the oval.

And last but not least, Young Public School, where the students were also treated to a practical session under the sun.

According to Lyon, he witnessed some talented young cricketers upon his visit to Young and shared a word of advice.

“Dream big and chase your dreams,” he said.

“Anything is achievable if you’re willing to put the hard work and effort in.”

The trio were also special guests at Young Junior Cricket Club registration event at McDonald’s yesterday afternoon.
