They were called out to the landmark tourism site yesterday after an eyewitness reported that the solid granite bridge that sits over the smaller waterfall at the gardens had been damaged.
Constructed from solid granite, believed to have been imported from China, the vandals appear to have pushed the guardrails from their metal fixings into the water below, leaving some of the blocks broken and beyond repair.
It is estimated some of the smaller elements of the guardrails weigh around 30 kilograms - which are just a third of the size of some of the other granite blocks pushed into the water.
Young Shire Council’s general manager Peter Vlatko said he is very disappointed people don’t show the respect the area deserves.
“To the people that did this - I hope you feel very proud and, for the community’s sake, I will say this - you are idiots,” he said.
