Freya Steele (percussion), Tessa Long (Frenchhorn) and Cassie Boland (flute) from Young High School were selected to participate in the Senior State Wind Band.
Cameron Steele (percussion) and Reid Noyes (trumpet) from Young High School, and Brady Noyes (clarinet) from Young Public School, were chosen to be part of the Junior State Wind Band.
This was a huge achievement for the young musicians and involved two intense days rehearsing at the Lewisham Arts Unit, followed by two rehearsals at the Sydney Opera House.
It was all in preparation for four public concerts at the Opera House over the following four nights.
The Senior State Wind Band performed two pieces including the spirited “Bulgarian Dances” by Mark Camphouse, and “A Movement for Rosa”, an emotional and moving piece written to honour civil rights heroine Rosa Parks.
The Junior Band played “Three Celtic Dances” by Brian Balmages comprising The Reel, The Air and The Jig.
Cameron Steele was also chosen as spokesperson for the Junior State Band at the final performance.
Both ensembles comprised 55-60 students selected from state government country and metropolitan schools throughout NSW, so it was a privilege and great achievement to have six students representing Young.
The trip was a great experience for all the students, especially for Cameron and Brady, being their first time performing in the Opera House.
