Young played the final game of the YOUCOW Cup against Cowra last Sunday with the result still in play going into the last tie. Over in the local competition, games saw plenty of goals in a few high scoring matches.
The early game was a roller-coaster ride with the lead changing hands multiple times before Penguins charged back into the match to win 6-5 over Cougars.
Penguins scored first after 10 minutes with Alex Blomfield finishing a good team move before Cougars managed to string together four goals and wrestle back the lead with goals to Loren Wilkinson and Brady Kenny. Alex was able score again for the Penguins, as well as Robyn Veness to bring Penguins within one point.
Liam McLachlan scored a neat goal from a brilliant pass from Matt Zuzek to push the lead out to two for Cougars with only 15 minutes to play. However the threats Penguins were creating with great field position began to pay off. Brendan Robinson chipped away at the lead.
Robyn added her second to level the game three minutes from time. Still pushing for the win Penguins hit the lead when Alex McLachlan buried a tight chance with only a minute to go.
The next game was equally tight although defence dominated proceedings between Blues and DTS.
Blues finished the better 2-1, although Bronte Rathjen opened the scoring for DTS converting a short corning for the early lead. Goals to Kylie McGovern and Paul Robertson were enough for Blues to take the points and move them back up to third place on the ladder.
Red Backs played Bears in the other late game with both teams undermanned.
It was Red Backs who raced away to a 9-1 win after an early settling period where neither team could find the backboard. Red Backs took the lead as Geoff Palmer scored, going into half time with a 4-nil lead.
After the resumption Darius almost instantly before Carol Clark showed great speed to tap in a deflection for Bears and break the duck. Red Backs then finished the game with a flurry with Peter, Geoff, and Brendan each getting their second and Darius netting his third. The win sees their point differential improve against leaders Penguins as they push for top spot on the ladder.
Draw for August 13: 1.30pm Red Backs versus DTS, Cougars/Blues. 3pm Bears versus Cougars, Penguins versus Blues, Red Backs/DTS, Red Backs/DTS.
The last tie between Young and Cowra was only half the event it was expected to be as Cowra failed to field a women’s team. The men’s game continued and Young needed a win to tie result.
In a see-sawing game Young took an initial lead which they maintained throughout despite Cowra repeatedly pegging them back to finish 4-2. Thanks to all who played and helped throughout all the games this year.
