Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) and Young Public School have been working together to review the school’s canteen menu to provide healthy options for students.
Young Public School were pleased to receive kitchen equipment vouchers to the value of $500 from MLHD to help make the menu healthier.
Schools were invited to take part in a School Canteen Menu Support pilot program as part of the larger NSW Live Life Well at School program.
The menu support was to meet standards for the NSW Fresh Tastes @ School Strategy and the Nutrition in Schools Policy.
As part of the support the school canteen manager, with the endorsement of the principal, provided their canteen menu to the MLHD Health Promotion Service who reviewed all items and provided feedback with tips and further ideas to ‘green up’ the menu.
“It has been a very constructive process and the result has been a healthier menu for the students with only a few little changes here and there,” Health promotion Officer Ms Manwaring said.
