The Hilltops council has advised motorists that they should adhere to the speed limit as there will be no grace period.
Hilltops Council spokesman David Newberry said the speed limit change was community driven.
“Roads and Maritime Services carried out a review of the speed limit as part of an ongoing speed review program and in response to feedback from the community,” he said.
“The assessment process concluded that Murringo Road near the intersection and directly to the east met the requirement for a speed zone reduction.
“The reduction will be from from 100km/h to 80km/h for a distance of approximately 1km east of the Apps Lane intersection.”
Mr Newberry said road users should be aware of the changes.
“Motorists should remember speed limits are enforceable once the signs have been installed,” he said.
Cootamundra Police Local Area Command Superintendent Christopher Schilt said the extension of the 80km/h speed limit zone was necessary.
"These speed limits are about community protection, it is about keeping people safe," he said.
"We want people to arrive at their destination safely."
Superintendent Schilt said motorists should drive for the conditions at all times.
"Motorists should drive in accordance with the posted speed limit," he said.
"It has been proven that excessive speed causes accidents.
"Local police will ensure that the speed limit is enforced at all times."
