The burial site is the Jerusalem war cemetery, a mile from the banks of the Jordon river, where Corporal Arnold Selwyn Metcalfe, aged 23 and born in Young, was laid to rest on April 20, 1918, the day after being killed in action serving with the first Light Horse Brigade east of Jericho.
Cpl Metcalfe was the son of Charles and Laura, he attended the Young district school before joining the bank of NSW, Young Branch, in 1919.
Arnold enlisted at Liverpool on February 23 19195, embarking on HMAT Clan McEwen A65 out of Sydney on June 28 and landing on Gallipoli on October 25.
He later served in Egypt and Palestine and was only 23 when he died, killed instantly with his horse after being hit in the head with a shell in a wheat field.
