Police make arrests for multiple vehicle thefts

Young Police Sector Officer in Charge Inspector Scott Wilkinson said police would allege the boys are responsible for stealing a number of vehicles and thefts from vehicles that occurred during February in both towns. 

“Enquiries made by police in Boorowa quickly identified both suspects, and investigations by police from Young resulted in both juveniles handing themselves into police,” he said.

“They made full confessions, and action will be taken against them under the Young Offenders Act for a combined total of seven stolen vehicles, and six stealing offences.  

“All of the vehicles have been recovered.”

Mr Wilkinson said one of the boys would also be charged with other offences.

“In addition to the stolen vehicles and stealing offences one of the boys was charged with an aggravated Break, Enter and Steal Offence that occurred at Griffith on December 28, 2017,” he said.

“He has been bailed and will appear at the Griffith Children's Court on March 21, 2018. 

Inspector Wilkinson said members of the public are urged to be vigilant and ensure that they lock their vehicles when not in use and secure the keys.

“The stolen vehicles had the keys in them, and the other vehicles were left unlocked,” he said.

"It is clear from the modus operandi that the thieves were unsophisticated and opportunistic, and did not possess the skill to start a vehicle without keys."

Inspector Wilkinson praised the officers involved for their efforts.

“This is a prime example of how policing will occur as a result of the re-engineered structure of the Police Force,” he said. “The offenders were identified due to the local knowledge of the police at Boorowa, and were quickly brought to heel by resources deployed from within the Young sector.”
