Mr O’Brien was less than impressed with Brendan Wright (27) of Young in Young Local Court on Tuesday when he was convicted and sentenced a prison term that will not see him eligible for release until July 16, 2018. Wright was convicted and sentenced for dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception after he tried to cash a cheque for $4000 at a local bank. He was also convicted and sentenced to prison for a number of domestic violence charges including common assault, destroy or damage property, stalk/intimidate fear after Wright sent videos of himself intoxicated in the victim’s house to one of the victims, trashing the house, assaulting a victim, coming at a victim with a knife and then being found by police naked and passed out on the front lawn of the property.
Wright’s solicitor was asked if there was anything he would like to submit to Mr O’Brien in his client’s defence to which the representative responded his client has no memory of the incident.
“Well that doesn’t impress me at all.” Mr O’Brien said.
Wright’s solicitor submitted he had been attempting to seek treatment to which Mr O’Brien responded that he believed there was no doubt the thought of full time custody had propelled Wright into seeking a facility.
“These are offences for which he will receive full time custody, that is the position he is currently facing,” Mr O’Brien said.
According to Wright’s solicitor he found the cheque in a local park. Mr O’Brien believed he was going to use the money to support himself and his $250 a day Ice habit.
“Here he is in February he was charged with those matters and required to attend court on the 6th of February and adjourned to a day in March and then two days after he was in court he’s drinking himself to oblivion, sends a message to the victim of him drinking in her residence and she comes home to find her home in disarray and he has then gone on to attack someone. Police were called and found him lying naked next to an empty bottle of tequila...What a disgrace!” Mr O’Brien said.
“It’s everyone’s wish that you wake up to yourself, but you cannot continue to behave this way. The community will not tolerate it, you shouldn’t tolerate it. I hope you take advantage of the opportunity.”
