Each year, the Year 10 students at the school have to coordinate a week of service to another community in Australia or overseas, helping out in any way that they can.
They have to organise an entire week of activities, as well as their accommodation, meals and transport and then do a presentation about their week back at their own school.
This year, some students from PLC chose to do their service learning at Murringo, Monteagle and Wombat Public Schools. This is the second year that Murringo has been involved in the project, so it was pleasing to see an extension to other small schools in 2018.
At each of the schools, the girls organised daily lessons with science definitely the biggest hit.
Each of the schools also organised some fun activities for the girls to experience life in a small country school.
At Monteagle, families were invited to come to school for a picnic lunch followed by a game of T-ball.
With two exchange students, from Italy and the United States among the visitors the PLC girls headed off to a farm after school where they were able to interact with farm animals. For the young lady from the USA Friday morning was the highlight of the trip when one of the students brought in her orphaned joey for the girls to hold and take photos with.
The week provides great benefits for all involved. Local students mix with older girls from different places and hear about their lives in the city and abroad. They experienced interesting lessons that support classroom learning. For many of the PLC students, this is the first time that they have ventured west of the Great Dividing Range, and they get to experience what life is like in a small country town, whilst also learning valuable lessons in teamwork, problem solving, public speaking and social skills.
All schools involved are keenly looking forward to welcoming a new group of PLC students in 2019.
