Young Rotary's 80th birthday: Prostate Cancer Support Group

The Prostate Cancer Support Group Young was formed as a Community Service Project of The Rotary Club of Young and has a core support group of men and also husband and wife teams.

Traditionally, men have not been good about discussing health issues. Please don’t let embarrassment or your ego get in the way of acknowledging that your body is susceptible to illness. Being aware may help you survive prostate cancer.

The latest data shows that approximately 20,000 men are diagnosed each year in Australia and approximately 3,300 men die each year.

Prostate cancer is potentially curable if detected and treated. Early detection can be achieved via the prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test and the digital rectal examination.

An early test may be performed on men who have no symptoms of prostate cancer, with the aim to find this cancer at an early, and potentially curable stage.

While prostate cancer is most common in men over the age of 50, younger men with a history of prostate cancer in their family can be more susceptible than those without a family history of cancer. Many doctors are now recommending that men over 40 should have regular health checks.

If you have recently been diagnosed or have prostate cancer, our support group in Young is open to men and women, as this illness also has an impact on other family members.

The Prostate Cancer Support Group meets at the The Young Services Club on the first Wednesday of the month at 6.30pm.
