Young golfer Joel Shields is making his professional debut at the Queensland PGA Championship this week.

Shields teed-off in the opening round at the Toowoomba City Golf Club on Thursday morning, and had carded one-over through six holes.
He said he'd set himself a goal of making the weekend's final rounds, which requires him to make the cut after the second round on Friday.

"This is my first chance as a professional. It'd be great to place well and get some more starts in upcoming events," Shields said.
Shields has developed his game playing at the Young Golf Club since the age of 12 years old, he said.

He's played in the US and most states and territories in Australia. The 23-year-old said playing in the Queensland PGA is one of the biggest moments of his career.
"I just want to thank my family and friends for their support over the years, and also the Young Golf Club."
