International Volunteer Week runs from May 20 to 26 and Mount St Joseph lifestyle coordinator Sandy Pronk is asking residents of Young of all ages to consider volunteering at the facility to help those who have led the way before them.
"Volunteers, it doesn't matter where they come from, what walks of life, you've always got something to give," Sandy said.
"Just sitting and talking and socialising with the residents is just the best thing for the residents and they get a lot out of it too."
Mount St Joseph volunteer, Michelle Prendable decided she wanted to volunteer and 'always knew I would' after losing her mother to dementia last year and has found the experience to be extremely uplifting.
"Mum had dementia, I received an awful lot of help from the organisations in town and I knew one day I would come back and try and give back," Michelle said.
"It was something I always knew I wanted to do."
Michelle visits with residents three to four times a week, chatting, placing footy tips, crafting, walking as well as many other different activities.
"It's extremely fulfilling," she said. "I feel like I have bonded with everyone."
"It is very rewarding," Michelle said. "You make new friendships, I've met so many different people and it's great talking to the residents, they're all different, they all have their own stories."
Anyone who would like to volunteer or find out more information can contact Sandy Pronk at Mercy Care - Mount St Josephs on 63801300.
