The Domestic and Family Violence Reference Group have organised a walk and family fun day to raise awareness of domestic and family violence in Young and surrounds.
According to interim data for 2019 from the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research [BOCSAR], 27 per cent of all domestic violence incidents in The Hume Police District occur in the Young sector.
While BOCSAR statistics for the 2018 calendar year reveals there was 109 domestic violence related assaults and 78 breaches of apprehended violence orders in the Hilltops local government area.
Inspector Jacob Reeves of Young Police said increased reports of domestic and family violence over the past 10 years is evidence of increased community awareness that this behaviour "must no longer be seen as a private matter".
He said offenders who are abusing their partners, children or family members will be identified by police.
"You will come to our attention and you will be held to account for your actions, it is just a matter of time. The victim is not responsible for your behaviour. You must take responsibility for your actions and stop the abuse and violence now," he said.
The walk begins at the corner of Boorowa Street and Clarke Street at 9.45am.
It will continue east along Boorowa Street towards Lynch Street, then north along Lynch Street to Anderson Park where the family fun day will take place.
Member of the The Domestic and Family Violence Reference Group Naomi Peters says it's about raising as much awareness as possible.
"This is the first year we've done a walk. We decided to get really active and make a lot of noise and have the family fun day afterwards," she said.
The family fun day includes a free barbecue lunch, face-painting and jumping castle.
There'll also be market stalls.
Lindt siege survivor and mental health and wellbeing advocate Selina Win Pe will be a guest speaker.
