For the past two years the Hodges family, who own a farm just outside the village, have grown sunflowers and allowed passersby to pick and pose for photos in their paddock.

Kristie Hodges said her husband Warwick came up with the idea as a way to brighten spirits during the drought last year.

Her son Joseph then sowed the sunflowers while daughter Kate created a hay bale sign adorned with the words "Pick Me" next to the paddock to encourage people to stop.

"It's just a small paddock next to the road that doesn't get used for much," she said.

"They cut the fence because they figured it would be really nice for people to stop and pick some. We don't harvest it, we don't do anything, we just see what comes up."

Kristie said she received a lot of positive feedback last year but word of mouth and photos of the paddock on social media has resulted in a lot more people making the drive out to pick sunflowers.

"It got out in Young first, and they came out again and put it on social media there," she said.

"[On the last weekend in May] I think people were getting out and about... we had at one time 20 cars parked out the front of our place, we must have had a few hundred people through.

"It was lovely, there were loads of people with kids running around picking flowers. There's a lot of nice photos going around."

While the sunflowers have since been wiped out due to frost, Kristie said her family was glad it could bring smiles to peoples' faces during tough times.

"This year they didn't go in until later, after the rain in January... which is totally the wrong time and they don't really grow here anyway so they didn't have a great germination, but they came up. I think the timing of them flowering has been fantastic," she said.

"It was to cheer people up, it's something positive with the drought and this year with coronavirus.

"A lot of things came together at once, the end of lockdown, the nice weather, everyone loves them."
