Victorian border to close

Locals last week were urged to not travel to Victoria or accept Victorian residents in their homes.

There were 14 cases recorded in NSW over the past week, all of whom were returned travellers in hotel quarantine.

The announcement on the border closure was made by Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews at 11.45am on Monday morning.

During the press conference Mr Andrews revealed after the state had recorded 108 cases on Saturday and a further 78 cases on Sunday the state had found another 127 cases up until Monday morning.

Despite the state shutting down certain postcodes and Department of Housing unit blocks the number of cases continued to rise.

Of the 127 new cases that had been recorded 34 of those cases are related to known and contained breakouts; 40 are the product of routine testing and a further 53 are under investigation.

According to Mr Daniels there was 645 active cases of COVID-19 in Victoria on Monday morning with a total of 2,660 recorded across the state.

Mr Daniels spoke with NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Prime Minister Scott Morrison in regards to the border on Monday morning.

"I am grateful to the Premier of NSW for her support in giving affect to that," Mr Daniels said.

"This is one of those precautionary measures, it is one of those things that I think will help us in broader terms contain the spread of the virus and what it means, for instance, is many staff who are currently being employed or deployed to take temperatures, to do all sorts of coordination work, whether it be at our airports or at train stations, for instance, will no longer have to do that work and can potentially be redeployed into arguably much more important roles.

"I apologise for any inconvenience that will cause people who have unavoidable travel to NSW."
