FOURTEEN of Young’s residents were the lucky recipients of giant cheques presented to them by Young mayor Stuart Freudenstein at a special ceremony for the announcement of the annual mayoral scholarships.

The scholarships, presented on January 17, are geared to assist students further their education, with all recipients sharing in the $5550 put aside by Young Shire Council each year.
The council has offered the program for more than a decade, supporting students with all sorts of costs, including living expenses at university. The funding, said the mayor, was not just academic but supported students who were keen to pursuing music and sporting goals.
Last year one animal science student was able to use the money to take part in a Charles Sturt University global experience which saw her spend time at a Sun Bear sanctuary in Cambodia.
Scholarship winners this year were Matthew Sheehan, Stephanie Hall, Emily Jones, Sarah Napier, Sophie Dunn, Caitlin O’Brien, Jessica Emmett, Zac Adrichen, Chloe Callaghan, Bradley Maxwell, Jennifer McRae, William Murphy, Jake Shoard and Jane Maloney.
Cr Freudenstein said the council was happy to give this small assistance to young people to help get them on the right career path.
“It’s good to have the community support our young ones and one day, you never know, they might come back and work in the community,” he said.
