Rainbow connection: Aaron Fuller sent in this photo last Thursday which he took as he was journeying back to Young from Temora last week.
It was his mum who encouraged him to do so because she felt, despite the wet and grey conditions, there is always something to smile about.
Jay Fuller works for remote health as a counsellor in Alice Springs and is currently down here in Young on holidays to see her grandkids. 
As Aaron pointed out, Jay doesn’t get to see too many rainbows up there.


Budget given final tick: In the absence of their mayor, general manager and two councillors, those councillors who remained gave the final tick on Young Shire Council’s 2014-2015 budget.
But in doing so, the six councillors present in the council chambers on Friday, May 30 ordered that from now on be compulsory for all councillors to attend meetings they said were of “this importance”.


Local lady left “violated” after falling victim to scam: Jenny Hockings has always tried to see the best in people; however after falling victim to a sophisticated computer scam, she has become more wary.
She was ready to get an early start to her Christmas shopping, with $500 saved up and loaded on a card. However, this was gone in an instant, as callous scammers hacked into her account.


$400K Powerball win for one lucky local: A BIG win for one local person last week when they took out Powerball’s second division prize of $401,400. Ted Loader of Young Newsagency called The Witness on Friday to share the great news of the Thursday night draw which is the biggest win they have witnessed.


Brumbies honour for U7s: You can probably remember it, your sporting moment in the spotlight as a child. Bowling five for seven as a 12-year-old or maybe it was the first time you served an ace. 
Well for these Under 7 Young Yabbies - or as some of their parents describe as the Wallabies and Wallaroos of the future - this moment shone brightly when they ran onto the field at GIO Stadium in Canberra on Saturday, May 31.


Simply the best: As a welding instructor at Riverina Tafe, Young, Mark Silk’s passionate approach to education has catapulted countless locals towards long and successful careers. This dedication to his trade was recognised last month when he was named the nation’s top welding trainer. The award was presented to Mark at the Welding Technology Institute of Australia’s (WTIA) annual awards dinner in Sydney. 

Ponytails for Young RDA: YOung Public School staff and students donned ponytails and riding wear last Thursday, all in support of Young’s Riding for the Disabled.
The Student Representative Council (SRC) organised the day to raise funds for the group, with everyone asked to make a gold coin donation.
The whole school got into the spirit of the day, sporting ponytails and dressing up in their favourite riding or farm wear.


Hassen’s message to Young: There is no doubt there is a major issue with littering in all towns and cities, however Young is taking a proactive approach to try to reduce this messy issue.  The committee thought it was a great idea to let local students have input into the creation of a slogan that could be used as part of a wider anti-littering campaign in and around Young.  Young High School Year 11 student Hassen Chemiet came up with the winning slogan, chosen to be used in the campaign. Hassen’s slogan clearly shows that it is completely unacceptable to litter.

Rising sport stars at Young North: Students from Young North Public School have featured prominently at the recent Zone Athletics Carnival held at Gus Smith Oval on Friday.  Shirene Abbas (junior girls) and Bridgette Dawe (11 years girls) were named age champions, while Duke Smith-Maloney (11 years boys), Shannae Hannon (senior girls) and Angus Jones (senior boys) were announced as runner-up age champions.
In total 14 students will represent the Zone at the Riverina Athletics Carnival.
And joining the above 14 students in their moment in the spotlight is Milli Felix Vonarx and Millie Hogan, who have been selected in the Riverina Girls Soccer squad. 


Devastating moment: Twenty one years on - June 11, 1993 - Onlookers could not quite believe what they had just seen when a ball of fire erupted on a hill just kilometres from Young airport on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend 21 years ago. 

Brazil World Cup comes to Young: THE Southern Cross Cinema in conjunction with the Young Lions Soccer Club will be live streaming Australia’s three World Cup matches from Brazil. EXCITEMENT: Young Lions Soccer Club women’s team members Lucy Caldow, Ebony Cant, Ataya Peters, Jemma Long, Hannah Corcoran, Samantha and Cassandra Edwards, Patricia Dawe, Southern Cross Cinema manager Dane Millerd, and April Caldow are excited for the first round of the Brazil World Cup to be screened at the Southern Cross Cinema tomorrow morning.
