In what is his first full year in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Championship, McCorkindale has shown plenty of front-running speed; however, it has been his consistency that has seen him drop out of championship-winning contention.
After four completed rounds, McCorkindale, driving the Porsche 911 GT3 that was purchased late last year from Shae Davies, sits third in the current championship point standings.
He has finished on the minor podium at two rounds, but a mixture of bad luck and inexperience has seen him miss out on more podium appearances.
“We’ve had a bit of a mixed bag of results so far this year, but I can take a lot of confidence away from the fact that I’ve been able to have consistent front-running speed,” the 23-year-old said.
“My team and I have been coming to the grips more and more with every outing, and this has allowed us to get better performance out of the car and consequently achieve some good results.”
McCorkindale continued on by saying that despite now being out of championship-winning contention, he is focused on finishing the year on a high.
“I know that I’m out of the championship hunt, but that doesn’t mean I can’t try and break through for a round win in the final two rounds,” he said.
“As I’ve proven this year, I have the pace but I just need to work on better consistency, so my focus is to turn into a round win and hopefully I can improve on my current championship position.”
The fifth and penultimate round of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Championship is to be fought out at Ipswich’s Queensland Raceway on the weekend of August 9 and 10.
McCorkindale would like to thank Dial Before You Dig, Dustan Constructions and Mr Mac Vacuum Excavations for all of their sponsorship, along with the support of his mum and dad (Chris and Garry).
