Since discovering her talents extend beyond the running track, she has secured five state representations in soccer, futsal, touch football and cross country.
In three weeks’ time Dowling will head to Sydney to compete in the NSW Indoor Futsal Titles, as well as taking part in the state titles with the Football NSW Western Girls Soccer team.
It was while playing for the Under 12 Riverina School Girls Soccer team in the Primary Schools Sports Association (PSSA) tournament held in Nelsons Bay in June, that Dowling caught the eye of selectors.
There she was scouted to try out for the Western Girls’ team.
When trialling for the side Dowling injured her knee, bringing a temporary end to her athletics commitments.
Despite this setback she still gained selection from a squad of 15.
Although she has now recovered from the injury the fact she’s participating in five other sports shows how tenacious and talented the young athlete is.
As part of her committments to the Football NSW Western Girls Soccer team she travels to Bathurst each Wednesday for training - a big commitment for an 11-year-old girl and her full-time working father.
Dowling, a member of the Young Lions Junior Soccer Club, also played for the Under 12s Harvey Norman team who won the grand final two weeks ago. She was named Woman of the Match.
She has also made the Riverina Girl’s Touch Football team and cross country team for PSSA.
A very humble Dowling is excited take part in team sports.
“I’m excited, and I couldn’t really believe they picked my name out, I’m pretty proud,” Dowling said.
She one day aspires to be either a Matilda - which means being selected for the Australian women’s soccer team - or hitting the track as the next Cathy Freeman.
“I am sure this will happen given her determination,” proud mum Sonya said.
“I’m enjoying that Anna’s not just focusing on athletics and is enjoying a team sport.”
