Michael Philpot, 58, of Young, is currently before the ACT Magistrates Court, where he has pleaded not guilty to using a carriage service to procure a person under 16.
The charge is a Commonwealth offence that carries a maximum 15 years’ jail.
But the prosecution indicated yesterday that the charge may be replaced with one of using a carriage service to access child pornography when the case returns next month.
The charge could not be laid as Philpot was not present in court.
The case was adjourned by Magistrate Beth Campbell after a brief mention.
Philpot stood down as principal of St Mary’s Primary School in Young in May last year.
The matter will be back in court on November 20 when he is expected to attend.
