This did not deter from the high quality of soccer displayed by the kids.
Having had the pleasure of witnessing a couple of Under 12 games, it is amazing the high quality of skills these kids possess. This is a group that oozes natural ability and, if coached correctly, should be real contenders to win some carnivals against our Canberra counterparts.
We are now seeking expressions of interest for our carnival coaches from our Under 7s to our Under 16s.
Congratulations to Sebastion Stratford, Frazer Johnson, Ethan Smith and Javarn Hurcum who all scored hat tricks last week here in Young.
This Saturday sees the second round of soccer after some very tight games in Round 1 to start our junior soccer season. We welcome all newcomers to the club and wish all players a successful year.
Teams, refs appointments and this week’s draw are now available on the website www.younglionssoccer club.com.au plus any other additional information.
Just a reminder the Young Lions Soccer Club in conjunction with Western Football NSW are conducting skill based training for specific age groups every Wednesday. There will be no cost for this training.
Doug McKenzie is the group co-ordinator and did a great job last Wednesday.
Times are as follows for those people who are interested in some extra training.
Under 6/7: 3.30pm-4pm
Under 8: 4pm-4.45pm
Under 9/10: 4.45pm-5.30pm
Under 11/12: 5.30pm-6.15pm
Under 13/14: 6.15pm-7pm
To make things easier for the parents and coaches of our uncompetitive younger age groups, our Under 5s, Under 6s and Under 7s will be training every Saturday half an hour before their game.
Teams will have to check the draw as some teams will have to travel to Grenfell and Boorowa throughout the year.
Teams travelling to Boorowa this week are The Hospital Shop in the Under 6s and The Honey Bees in the Under 7s.
The Young Lions Soccer Club asks that any parent or guardian, who does not want their child’s photo taken or published, to please let us know as soon as possible.
Match reports, May 9:
Donges IGA Under 17s travelled to Grenfell on Saturday to take on the Grenfell Stingers.
The 10-2 score, in favour of the Grenfell side, was not a true indication of the performance put in by Donges IGA. With three players down, Donges IGA played with great control and team spirit against a full Grenfell team.
The first half started off with both teams pushing the ball around, feeling each other out and with IGA’s captain Lachlan Cooper controlling his team, consisting of Alex Wark, Emily Harrison and Michael Cram, Grenfell found the going tough in the opening part of the game.
Donges IGA had limited chances during the first half, they looked impressive with their build-up work, with Declan Summerfield working hard up front, but could not convert their efforts into goals.
Manea Alterator, in his first game as goal keeper, worked valiantly to try and keep the Grenfell attack off the scorecard, but after relentless raids and the loss of Michael Cram who had to come off the field for medical treatment.
Grenfell’s Troy Chapman scored a hat trick of gaols in a matter of minutes, meaning the first half definitely belonged to the Grenfell team, leading 4-nil at half time
Donges IGA controlled the game in second half and started to put together some great attacking raids.
Wiremu Alterator started to assert some dominance and determination, along with Manea Alterator, Will Walker and Lachlan Cooper seen some heavy pressure put on to Grenfell as Donges IGA started to dominate.
Then Manea scored a good goal to bring the score back to 4-1.
Grenfell scored again before Will Walker split the Grenfell’s midfield and backline in two and scored one of his trademark goals bring the score to 5-2.
Donges IGA kept the pressure up, but with two injured players Will Arthur and Michael Cram struggling but still playing so not let their team mates down.
With fatigue starting to set in it was only a matter of time before Grenfell would score again and they did, going in three times in the dying minutes to make the final score 10-2.
The first half of the Steadfast Homes Under 12s match was very evenly matched, with Steadfast Homes the first to score.
It was soon 1-1 then 2-2, but Steadfast Homes put on four goals to one in the second half to win 6-3.
Goal scorers for Steadfast Homes were Ethan Smith (3), Rhys Lacey (1), Lachlan Crouch (1) and Jonathan Thomson (1).
It was a solid team effort with both attack and defence working hard. Sam Smith’s (mids) deft passing in attack and clever interceptions in defence earned him man of the match for the Steadfast Home side.
See you out on Gus Smith Oval soon - keep kicking!
