Young Shire Council is seeking to retrieve over $100,000 from former general manager Peter Vlatko who recently resigned from the council. It is understood the resignation came as a result of suspicions of financial mishandling by Mr Vlatko.

One of the changes included in a new proposal for changes to federal electoral boundaries in NSW is slashing the Hume electorate almost in half, with Young, Cowra, Harden and Cootamundra proposed to move into the Riverina electorate.

More than 6300 people from right around Australia are currently partaking in the Great Cycle Challenge – Riding to Fight Kids’ Cancer over October, and among them are three people from Young, including Clara Collison. Photo submitted.

This year’s Cherry Chase is set to feature the inaugural Macca’s Young Team Challenge with three categories - largest participating school team, largest participating community/business team and the fastest team of four. Photo Elouise Hawkey.

Young Shire Council has two options for its future operational structure according to IPART’s assessment of local government Fit for the Future proposals. We’ve been assessed as “fit” if we merge with Boorowa Shire - which could deliver $31M in net benefits over a 20 year period or a four-way merger between Young, Boorowa, Harden and Cootamundra - with benefits of $42 million.

This time last year - RFS Regional west manager Paul Smith and Bush Fire Resilience for Aboriginal Communities (BRAC) project coordinator David Curry, who are both based in Young, were awarded a Resilient Australia Award.

This time in 2012 - AFTER two and a half years of trying for a baby naturally, Kylie and Justin Perrin of Young turned to a fertility clinic for help. There was a push to have CCTV installed in Young’s main street to combat crime.

This time in 2010 - The Young Oncology Unit was officially opened by the founding medical oncologist Dr Paul Craft and Greater Southern Area Health Service acting chief executive officer Dr Maggie Jamison. 

This time in 2004 - Council was preparing to consider an application for a 76-place childcare centre at the corner of Thornhill and Boorowa Street at its monthly meeting.

This time in 1995 - ICAC says it will not be pursuing inquiries in relation to former South West Electricity general manager Russell Healy. And the first load of local cherries head to Sydney.

Optic fibre will be rolled out across Young, Cowra, Cootamundra, Harden and Grenfell from next year, allowing residents to connect to fast broadband. The news comes after Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor announced its three year rollout plan.

First to fire off shots in the public forum was Bribbaree farmer David Noakes who questioned the validity of the recent mayoral election, in light of the fact the actions of Mr Vlatko - who acted as returning officer - were under investigation. A woman set her former partner’s house on fire in Koorawatha last December, completely destroying it, out of an act of desperation, Young Local Court has heard.

Commons Road residents Roslyn and Kevin Rattenbury dread harvest season with a passion because every year they have to endure the dust expelled by trucks which, they say, fly down the road. Roslyn said the dust builds up in clumps in their gutters, infiltrates their water tanks and their washing.

Monday saw a large number of children turn up and try the Netsetgo clinic at the Young Netball courts. During the hour children had the chance to develop their eye, hand co-ordination and further their physical development.
