YOUNG’S sporting community is again at a loss following the death of well-respected community man, Mr Roy Barton, aged 90.

Mr Barton, affectionately known for his regular Riff Reff columns in The Young Witness, passed away peacefully at Mount Saint Joseph’s Nursing Home in Young on Friday, April 28.
Before moving to Young in 1982 Mr Barton refereed to international standard in Melbourne, as well as being a liaison officer for Victorian Rugby Union.
Mr Barton earned the title of a very community-minded man for his time invested in the Young Yabbies Rugby Union Club, and as stage director with the Young Theatre Company.
He was presented life membership of both organisations.
Mr Barton held a committee position with the Yabbies for over 20 years, during which time he acted as president and received the President’s Award in 1989.
For some time Mr Barton also assisted his son-in-law, Cr John Walker, as minutes secretary of the RSL.
“He was also very committed to his family, but had an outgoing jovial nature that endeared him with many organisations and people,” Cr Walker said.
Roy was the beloved husband of Ione (dec), and father of Beverly Walker of Young, Julie Berg of New Zealand, and Jane Leader of Texas.
Relatives and friends of the ex-service personnel are invited to attend the internment of Mr Barton’s ashes into Monteagle Cemetery on Tuesday, May 10 commencing at 11am.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will follow at 2pm in St John’s Anglican Church, Young.
