Two new gentle exercise classes have started in Young targeting people aged over 50.
The classes run on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Young PCYC, commencing at 9.30am and run for approximately one hour.
The Young Police Citizen’s Club and Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) are providing these classes for Young residents for a gold coin donation as, among its many benefits, gentle exercise is shown to prevent falls that may result in injury.
It is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to keep their mobility and be active into their older age.
The classes are delivered by recently trained PCYC staff Trudi Cross and Noojood Schmait, and with the aim of improving physical, social and mental wellbeing of people of any age but especially older people.
According to the instructors the goal is to keep people active as they age to prevent falls in later life, keep people fit and healthy and have a bit of fun.
“The class is ideal for people who have always thought about getting involved in gentle exercise,” Trudi said.
“It is mostly helpful to those who wish to improve their balance and flexibility in a friendly, social setting.
“Everyone is welcome to come and join in.”
The classes aim to improve access to safe physical activity, especially for older adults living in rural communities.
These classes form part of a network of many physical activity options available throughout the Murrumbidgee Local Health Network for people over the age of 50 and form part of the Physical Activity Local Network.
According to MLHD Health Promotion Officer, Barb Manwaring, it’s an affordable way for residents to take part in physical activity.
“We all know the importance of regular physical activity to maintain good health and this is a great chance for community members to take part in a low cost and fun program offered locally,” she said.
“In the long term by undertaking regular gentle exercise you will significantly lessen the likelihood of having a fall as you age as well as maintaining a healthier weight and improved mobility.
“The only cost to participants for each class is a gold coin donation.
“All you need to do to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity is become a member of the Young PCYC and make a gold coin donation for a full hour class!”
