Bad conditions and a sloppy pitch met the Yabbies at Hall on Saturday in the double points round of the John I Dent Cup.
The First Grade Yabbies shot into the match against ladder leaders Hall Rugby Club with an early try disallowed due to an obstruction.
From then on Hall dominated the game with hard tackles and quick ruck work, resulting in the Yabbies dropping their heads and finishing the first half down 28-nil.
Although having the bulk of possession in second half the Yabbies were unable to capatilise when a Hall player was sin binned for foul play. Hall ran out winners, 49-nil.
In Second Grade the Yabbies out-muscled Hall 28-7.
Scott Astin opened the scoreline for Young with an early try. Connor McGregor, Matt Reid and James Maloney followed Astin’s lead, each bagging a try of their own.
Coach Tom Wills said both teams showed frustration, resulting in Hall receiving three yellow cards and Young a red.
“This was a tense hit out there was a lot of niggle between the two sides, we didn’t let that get to us though and it proved on the scoreboard,” he said.
“As usual Pete Maher had a cracking game slotting four from four conversions.
“The whole side lifted in the second half after we were reduced to 14 men, it would have been easy to drop our heads but the lads showed a lot of heart only letting one try in.”
Best on ground for First Grade was Tom Doonan, and Tom Hamplett for Second Grade.
The Yabbies travel away again next week taking on the Canberra Royals.
