An internal review of the matter is already complete, but a spokesperson for the Department of Education said it had elected to have an “external review of the school’s administrative processes”.
A date for the review has not been set down but its findings will be referred to the NSW Privacy Commissioner.
The Commissioner, Dr Elizabeth Coombs, said the education department had chosen to notify her of the potential breach, even though such notifications were not mandatory.
”I encourage all NSW public sector organisations subject to NSW privacy legislation, to follow the example of the NSW Department of Education….so that we can assist them to adequately handle the situation,” she said.
