An Orange man has been arrested after he was stopped by highway patrol officers for speeding through the township of Young on Sunday evening.
Police who stopped a driver also allegedly found a package of cocaine in the boot of the car.
Young Traffic and Highway Patrol were alerted to a driver allegedly driving dangerously between Young and Cowra.
Shortly after 4.35pm on Sunday they stopped a black Audi sedan after it was allegedly detected travelling at more than 100km/h in a 60km/h zone in Elizabeth Street, and spoke with the 35-year-old driver.
Police will allege that when the man’s vehicle was searched a package containing cocaine was found in the boot. The drugs have an estimated potential street value of up to $67,000.
The man, from Orange, was arrested and taken to Young Police Station where he was charged with drive manner dangerous, possess drug – indictable quantity and breach of bail.
He was bail refused and taken to Wagga Wagga Police Station, where he will appear at Wagga Wagga Local Court on Monday.
Traffic and Highway Patrol Command’s Acting Assistant Commissioner, David Driver, praised the work of the Young officers.
“While this arrest began with a report of a vehicle being driven dangerously, it was good work by the Highway Patrol officer that led to the recovery of the drugs,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Driver said.
“This demonstrates how Traffic and Highway Patrol officers across NSW have the training, skills and initiative to identify potential offenders beyond obvious road offences.
“I commend the good work shown in today’s arrest; it should send a message to all motorists that Highway Patrol officers are always on the lookout for offenders, be they speeding, driving dangerously, or carrying illicit drugs,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Driver said.
