The annual Cherry Chase has been postponed for 2016 in hopes of becoming more available to fun run enthusiasts at a later date.
Young Youth Council deputy mayor, Lizzie Butt, said the change of date will hopefully mean more runners will take part in the popular community event.
“We moved it simply because it was a better time of year for a lot of people – it wasn’t that Christmas rush or conflicting with people going on holidays, the Cherry Festival,” she said.
Instead the event will be held in early 2017 when people have returned from school holidays, there’s warmer weather and sporting teams will be taking part in preseason preparations.
The change of date – yet to be determined – also worked in the favor of Youth Council members, many of who are in Year 12 and currently preparing for their HSC exams.
Lizzie – a Year 12 student herself – welcomed the idea.
“It’s a lot easier for us to organise it without hte stress of the HSC along with organising the race,” she said.
“We were all really pleased with that decision.”
The Youth Council now hope the change of date will be well received by the community.
“Hopefully we’ll have a really big turnout like in previous years, we hope it brings more runners as well,” Lizzie said.
