To say that the weather was fine and the track good was certainly an understatement last Tuesday night when the Young Harness Racing Club conducted a seven race programme at the Young Paceway.

The first of the night was taken out by the well supported Parkes last start winner, Homestead Lad ($3.70) driven by Reece Maguire for trainer Brett Hutchins. Taken to the lead soon after the start, the winner now of six races had a 2¼ meter advantage over the locally trained Forest Fury ($5.40) with the Wendy Turnbull trained Pingrove ($9.60) claiming third prize missing out by just a half head.
Local trainer Troy Fletcher was more than excited when Mary’s Little Rose ($1.60) made it three from four in defeating Old Jack Cambo ($7.70) and the Nathan Turnbull trained mare Lilbitofsumthin ($11.80) in the second race of the night.
Best supported horses continued their dominance with Armbro Chimes ($3.10) taking out race three finishing strongly over the concluding stages of the race to defeat second favourite Crackerjack Joe ($4.30) and Kenny Dee Dee ($13.00) for Nathan Hurst. The winning margin of a neck with two metres separating second and third made for an exciting finish. The final two quarters of 29.6 and 29.6 gave the winner a mile rating of 2:00.5.
Handy Bonus, a veteran of 55 starts continues to defy the odds by consistently turning up and running an honest race, his last four starts being over various distances at Temora, Wagga and Young.
Favourites continued to greet the judge as Scarlet Satene ($2.20) recorded a comfortable win for trainer, driver Mat Rue in race five.
Leading at the bell, the Artistic Fella mare ran two solid final quarters of 29.1 and 28.4 to post a 2½ metre winning margin over second favourite Brocks Under Fire ($2.40) with the local pacer and recent New Zealand import Kotare Kasai ($16.40) finishing third.
Mitch Turnbull drove a well timed race to take out race six with the Live Or Die mare Givemtheslip ($3.10) in defeating the more fancied Browns Creek trained pacer Taylah Studleigh ($2.10) driven by Jake Davis with Forbes trainer Jeff Brown taking home third money with another honest performance from his four year old Robin Hood mare Girl Of The Glen ($18.30) who put in a solid effort having only had seven starts in her career.
The second locally owned and trained pacer greeted the judge in the final race of the night. Bred by Neil Wilkes, To Alaska ($7.60) driven by Kenneth Wade sat outside the leader for most of the journey to record her first win from seven starts in defeating the pace maker Counting Stars ($2.60) driven by Mat Rue with Taylor Robin ($4.20) finishing third in an exciting final race of the night.
The winner is by Northern Luck and was bred at Maimuru by Neil and has rewarded him and his mate Ken with an overdue win, lets hope the show continues and the daughter of Shegoesgood, a mare that had limited starts around the Maitland area with little success and has unfortunately been subsequently de-registered for racing or breeding, can greet the judge once again in the not too distant future.
The Young club will race again on Tuesday night January 31 with meetings this weekend at Bathurst Friday night and Wagga Saturday with the big meeting at Canberra this Sunday evening.
