Ambo’s hot uniform dispute

Last week the APA advised paramedics not to wear long-sleeved over-shirts during the recent weeks of scorching temperatures.

Young NSW ambulance inspector Stephen Pollard would not speak on the issue instead referring the Witness to the union for comment.

APA NSW secretary Gary Wilson said he has received multiple complaints about the heavy uniform from members in the south-western NSW region where temperatures have hovered regularly around the 40-degree mark recently.

"We have two shirt options available to us, we have a summer shirt which has been likened to a shower curtain or a heavy winter long-sleeve shirt," he said.

"The problem we have is that on really hot days staff that are working out in the sun are finding it unbearable, they become soaked in sweat from collar to waist in the polyester blend.

"All we are asking for is a temporary reprieve from the uniform policy and to wear a NSW ambulance provided cotton t-shirt and a high vis vest over the top which makes ambo’s readily identifiable and is a lot cooler option than the one the service has provided."

NSW cotton growers have called on the state's ambulance service to specify Australian cotton for its paramedics' uniforms, in order to keep first responders cool in hot and testing conditions.

"Australian cotton would be an excellent choice for paramedics' uniforms - it is light and soft, and suitable for use against the skin. Unlike synthetic fibres, such as polyester, cotton is a natural fibre known for its breathable qualities,” Cotton Australia CEO Adam Kay said.

NSW Ambulance issued a statement that said their uniform guidelines are necessary to ensure staff are compliant with Work Health and Safety requirements.

"NSW Ambulance will be meeting again to discuss this issue with union representatives shortly to ensure this matter is satisfactorily resolved," the statement said
