Young Fire and Rescue NSW captain Ryan Terry said emergency services were called to a villa on Gordon Street at 11pm Monday night and found the building to be well alight.
“Crews worked on the fire with a line of hose and contained it to the unit of origin,” he said.
“Fire crews extinguished the blaze in about 15 minutes which was great work by our boys; the building had a working smoke alarm which probably saved the other units from catching alight.”
Detective Inspector Scott Wilkinson said after the blaze was extinguished by firefighters, the body of a 60-year-old man was located inside the premises.
“A crime scene was established which is being examined by forensic specialists,” he said.
“Police are investigating the circumstances of the fire, and we haven’t determined if the fire is suspicious or not. Once the forensic services have completed their investigation, we will have a clearer idea as to how the fire started.
“There were people in the neighbouring units, and they are okay, there are no other injuries as far as we are aware.
“We believe the deceased is a long-term resident and he has yet to be formally identified. A report will be prepared for the Coroner.”
Police are urging anyone with information about this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au/ or call the Young Police Station on 02-632-8199.
