With two in the men’s competition, first grade and third grade and a women’s team in the women’s first grade.
The two men’s teams travelled to Tolland in Wagga while the women’s team travelled to Temora. In the third grade game Young took on Tolland. With the club looking to use the side as development for younger players before stepping into first grade the capability of the team was unknown.
However with some older heads leading the young kids around the park, Young were comprehensive winners walking away with a 7-0 win. Goals were scored by Abdul Arja (2), Isaac Anderson (2), Will Anderson, Nathan Hislop and Jarvan Hurcum.
The side played with enthusiasm and some excellent possession and passing moves. Strong games were had by Alex Wark and Cody Edwards at the back in their first senior game. Matt Dunn pulled off some strong saves in goal to keep Tolland at bay and a clean sheet.
This weekend the Lions will look to make their home ground advantage count as they take on last year’s Grand Finalists Lake Albert Sharks.
“Lake Albert won it in 2016 and lost on penalties last year,” Mellish said. “Our main aim this season is to be consistent in what we do.”
While over in Temora in the women’s first grade, Young took on Temora. Young have started the season well with excellent numbers at training which in turn led to an excellent showing against Temora. With the team being led by Jemma Long, Young finished the game with a massive win, 13-nil. Goals were scored by Maggie Davis (5), Freya Hewitson (3), Micaela Hall (2) and one each to Emma Suitor-Clark, Bianca Roach and Brittany Clarke in her first senior game.
“Considering we only have a few from last years team the game was very encouraging for the season to come,” Long said.
In round two the women take on Henwood Park in Wagga on Sunday while the men’s teams are both at home in Young with third grade at 1pm and first grade at 3pm at Hall Bros Oval.
