According to data from the Bureau of Meteorology the hottest day ever on record for April in Young was set on April 6 1986 when the mercury hit 35 degrees Celsius.
However, in 1988 the weather station moved from Young Post Office to the Airport where the most recent record had been set on April 6, 2016 at 32.6 degrees Celsius, but last Wednesday April 11 the newest record in the last 30-years was set with the temperature reaching 33.9 degrees Celsius.
According to data from the Bureau of Meteorology the average temperature in Young for the month of April is 22.7 degrees Celsius.
Even with the higher than usual temperatures for this time of the year it is the difference in the high and lows that has most locals scratching their head as to what is going on with the weather with a 20 degree Celsius difference in the temperature last Wednesday alone.
“May to July daytime temperatures are likely to be warmer than average for southern Australia,” a Bureau of Meteorology climatologist said.
The climatologist also said that Young can expect warmer than average nights over autumn and the start of winter with the period expected to be warm all round until the middle of winter.
However, it’s not all bad news with a wetter than average couple of months predicted by the Bureau for Young and south-east of the country which should help many local farmers who have started to suffer due to the dry and hot conditions experienced since the beginning of the year.
According to the Bureau of Meteorology’s forecast model there is a 75 percent chance Young will receive in the range of 100-200mm of rainfall between May and July, with a 75 percent chance of between 10 and 25mm of rain in May alone.
The forecast models also show there is a 70-75 percent chance of temperatures being warmer between May and July than in the previous years. The weather over the weekend will be in the high 20s and cloudy with minimum temperature of 9 degrees Celsius.
