Club president Garry Lucas said the club wanted to move in a new direction for next season.
“We wanted a non-playing coach in 2019 because we feel it may be better for us,” he said.
“A playing coach can only see what is in front of him whereas a non-playing coach can see the entire field from the sidelines and be able to move more quickly if adjustments need to be made.
“We spoke to the players, and they were keen to be coached by Roy, and he was keen to give it a go, so we’ll try it next season.”
For Jewitt, a return to first-grade coaching is something he is excited about.
“I coached first grade in the 90s as a playing coach, and I’ve stayed involved with the club over the years since then, I am looking forward to next season,” he said.
“The club has a lot of talent, with the under 15s, 16s, 18s and reserves all in finals contention this season. There are also a lot of talented players in first grade that I hope come back next season.
“I’ll bring my own style to the job, the players will be fit, they’ll have some fun at training, and I think the season will be very enjoyable.
“I’d like to unite all the senior grades and get all the coaches to work together, get us on the same page, we’ve got some fantastic players, and the future looks bright for the Cherrypickers.”
