The purpose of the 2018 event will be to empower every Australian involved in sport - whether they are part of a local community club, regional, state, semi-professional or elite sports organisation - to stand up, speak out and act when it comes to violence against women.
“Sport is a crucial part of Australia’s DNA, providing the perfect environment to raise awareness of the importance of respectful relationships,” White Ribbon Australia CEO Tracy McLeod said. “The social bonds which bind sport fans also include looking out for each other’s safety, especially women who may be experiencing violence in the home.
“It is essential that the prevention of men’s violence against women is incorporated into the DNA of the community – into their training, events and communication in order to maximise community impact and to develop a sporting culture based on respect and inclusion to help prevent the cycle of violence against women.”
Funds raised go towards supporting White Ribbon’s national primary prevention campaign, which aims to stop violence before it occurs, through education initiatives in schools, workplaces and the broader community. To find out more go to www.whiteribbon.org.au/night.
