Mr Schilt said he couldn’t be more proud of the boxers and hopes to make the fight night an annual event.
“It was a hugely successful night. There were some great bouts, there was 17 in total it was a great turn out from the Young community. We had the club packed and it made for a great atmosphere. I’d say at least 500 were there,” Chris Schilt said.
There was some stand out performances throughout the night including Young’s Jason L’Estrange who received the William Scoard Memorial Trophy for best local fighter.
Beau L’Estrange took out the coaches award for “being a warrior” and Gerard Richens fought in the fight of the night and was able to win the battle.
“They performed exceptionally well. For a lot of them it was their first fight. You could tell they put in a lot of effort, there was great skill on show,” Mr Schilt said.
“There were some other stand outs including Thomas McIlhatton and Beau L’Estrange. They took on very experienced fighters even though it was their first fights. They showed courage to take the fight even though they knew they were coming up against more experienced fighters.
“They didn’t get a win, they both performed exceptionally well and showed skills of people who have been boxing for a lot longer.
“All the girls did really well, everyone did a great job.”
Mr Schilt, who has more than 15 years experience as a boxing trainer and is the president of the NSW Police boxing club, believes the sport will grow in the Cherry Capital with amateur boxing set to continue at PCYC Young.
“We had a great show of support. This is an event we’d love to bring to Young again and hopefully make it an annual event,” he said.
“Amateur boxing will continue in Young and I only see it getting stronger.”
The amount of money raised on the night is yet to be confirmed.
