The Environmental Protection Authority [EPA] and Hilltops Council are investigating the cause of a sewer overflow in Young on Tuesday morning.

The overflow was contained as much as possible, however, some of the discharge released into Burrangong Creek near the Campbell Street Bridge.
Safety signage and fencing is in place warning residents to avoid contact with the water.
“A sewer spill has occurred. The watercourse may cause a risk to human health. Avoid contact with the water,” the sign reads.
Both council and the EPA are investigating and actively monitoring the site to prevent any further public health risk.
The length of the contamination is at this stage unknown.

”Council are working closely with the Environmental Protection Authority to minimise any impact to the environment and reduce any risk to public safety,” Hilltops mayor Brian Ingram said.
The EPA and council were continuing investigations on Wednesday.
