Bede Ryan had a large gathering of friends and relatives to help him celebrate his 80th birthday on February 2 at the Young Services and Citizens Club.

Chris Worthington was asked to speak on behalf of Bede. Chris and Bede have been friends since they met 64 years ago as students at St Stanislaus’ College, Bathurst.
Bede received his early education at the Burrowa Convent School and Christopher was educated at the Young Christian Brothers College, having come to Young with his father who was a teacher at the Young High School.

Because of all the Ryans that migrated to Australia a large proportion settled at Boorowa and Boorowa became known as the Tipperary of Australia.
Bede’s grandfather who was a baker became the first mayor of Boorowa and was distinguished from the other branches of Ryans by being known as the Bakery Ryans, the others were known as the Waterhole Flat Ryans and the Ryandale Ryans.
Bede was particularly honoured to have Bishop Patrick Power attend his birthday celebration. Bede and Bishop Pat first met as students at St Columba’s Seminary, Springwood in 1959.

Patrick became a Bishop in the Canberra Goulburn Archdioceses and Bede took up a position as a cereal chemist at the Young Roller Flour Mill.
Bishop Pat conducted Bede and the then Janice O’Brien’s wedding ceremony at St Mary’s Church.
